Essential oils have grown in popularity in recent years, and for good reason! It’s no longer some alternative view, as studies have shown that certain oils actually can have serious health and wellness benefits. We were quite skeptical ourselves when we were first introduced, but have grown to love having oils around the house.
There are many ways that essential oils can benefit us, and we thought we’d cover a few. These are ways which we have found essential oils to be helpful in our own lives and hope you find the same!
There are several essential oils that can be beneficial in helping to relieve pain. Chamomile is a popular oil that has properties that can relieve anxious feelings and act as an anti-inflammatory. You can rub a little on the sore spot for some calm and soothing pain relief.
Marjoram is another popular essential oil for pain relief. It has been found to be helpful with aches and muscle cramps, and is a perfect post-workout oil.
Although not exactly the same as muscle pain, lavender oil can help sooth itching. Whether it’s a slight allergy to grass or a healing cut, a little lavender can go a long way in soothing the discomfort.
Essential oils can also be helpful with relaxation. Sometimes we need to chill out, get some rest, and/or relieve some anxiety. We have a diffuser in every room of our home and are constantly diffusing different oils to bring us what we need in that moment.
We have to mention Lavender again, and it won’t be the last time! It’s really one of our favorites. Lavender is one of the few oils that has actually been studied. Aromatic Science has a great page with different research articles about how useful lavender oil can be.
Ylang ylang is another oil that can be helpful in relaxing. Coming from the Pacific Islands, ylang ylang has been used for centuries for its relaxing properties. It’s also one of the scents in many perfumes, perhaps most notable Chanel No. 5. As an added bonus, it’s believed to be an aphrodisiac!
Chamomile, frankincense, and bergamot are also all popular essential oils used for relaxation.
Sometimes we don’t need to relax. Sometimes we need some energy to help us through our day! Citrus oils such as orange, lemon, grapefruit and lime can help boost your energy. We diffuse a blend of citrus oils in the afternoon to help us keep going during that 3:00pm burnout.
Minty oils like spearmint and peppermint are also beneficial in giving us some energy. The great part about using essential oils for energy is that we receive a natural boost in energy and focus, and don’t suffer the intense crash we may with coffee or energy drinks.
Finally, spicier oils like clove and cinnamon can give us that extra little boost. Not to be used carelessly as they may be very potent, these oils diffused in the air can help keep the mind concentrated and on task.
Alcoholism and Addiction
There are many essential oils for alcoholism. Of course, no single oil is going to simply cure a disease or pattern of behavior across the board. However, we can use essential oils to aid in the process of getting clean.
One oil we love for addiction is black pepper. It’s an intense oil that is a bit like having pepper spray around, but a drop under the tongue can really help us with cravings for drugs and alcohol. It’s especially helpful if you’re trying to quit smoking, so give it a try!
Basil is another oil that is great in the process of recovery. It can restore mental energy, and help clear negative thought patterns. Another favorite for addiction is bergamot, which can help ease cravings, control appetite, and break negative thinking patterns.
These are just a few uses of essential oils. The best way to go is to find someone who knows a lot about using them, and see what you can find out. We’ve found many different oils we’ve never even heard of that have been incredibly helpful in our lives!
